End of term food technology with Lydia

This trimester JHMC are doing Food Technology. We are learning how to purchase, prepare and store food safely and properly. Tuesdays lesson was on Bacteria and how to prevent it in the kitchen. Bacteria is tiny micro-organisms which under certain conditions can cause food related illnesses. There are many different types of bacteria and it is important that food is handled, prepared, served and stored correctly so that bacteria cannot grow and cause illness. Most bacteria grow when there is warmth, moisture and air. Foods such as meat, chicken and dairy products are the most likely to cause illness if they are not handled safely. They can be kept in the refrigerator for short lengths of time otherwise they should be stored in a freezer. They should never be left on the bench. Every lesson we cook something new, such as muffins, pikelets, rice salad, mousetraps and pinwheel cones. This week we made a rice salad with ham, veggies, garlic and ginger. The food was yum and healthy, we can’t wait for our next lesson.
